>> Monday, June 11, 2012
MOSCOW The Russian cinema fund for support to the film industry has announced a new list of film production companies entitled to government cash, which has been increased from seven to 10. The countrys main agency that administers state funds earmarked for the film sector also said it is forming a working group to consider co-productions applications for funding.
Renat Davletyarovs Real Dakota, Alexei Uchitels Rok, Roman Borisevich Koktebel and Alexander Rodnyanskys Non Stop Production have been added to the list, while Igor Tolstunovs Profit was removed from it. Companies on the top ten list, which also features Nikita Mikhalkovs TriTe, Fyodor Bondarchuks Art Pictures, Timur Bekmambetovs Bazelevs, the film arm of the countrys largest TV station Channel One, Direktsiya Kino, as well as STV and Central Partnership, are entitled to 2.25 billion roubles ($70 million) between them this year.
Depending upon the individual project, up to 25% of state cash is supposed to be paid back, and if it is spent on a films distribution or promotion, between 50% and the entire amount is to be paid back. This system, under which state cash is channeled to production companies as opposed to individual projects under the previous system, was introduced two years ago, and there was substantial criticism of the scheme from companies that didnt make the list.
The fund also said that a working group for considering co-productions applications for funding is to be formed in a bid to step up international co-operation. Yelena Romanova, the funds international departments director, said in a statement that the number of co-productions that will receive the organizations funding at various production stages is to significantly increase this year.
