Foreign Box Office: 'The Avengers' Dominates Overseas, Grossing More Than $440 Million In 12 Days

A muscular opening in Russia plus extraordinarily strong holdovers in key overseas markets propelled Marvels The Avengers to a commanding No. 1 weekend perch on the foreign theatrical circuit with $151.5 million grossed in 52 territories, hoisting the films 12-day offshore box office total to $441.5 million.

Worldwide cume including the films record $200.3 million domestic opening stands at $641.8 million. The weekends foreign tally was a mere 18% down from the opening weekend figure last round, an indication of the films incredible staying power at the box office.

Costarring Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo, (The Hulk), Tom Huddleston (villain Loki) and Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), the action-packed mlange of comic book heroes the first Marvel release marketed and distributed by Disney opened May 3 in Russia and grossed $17. 9 million, a market record for a Marvel title.

Other key markets: Mexico ($40.2 million), Australia ($32.2 million), Korea ($31.3 million), Brazil ($31 million), France ($26.4 million), Italy ($18.8 million),Germany ($18.3 million), China ($17.4 million), Spain ($14.4 million), Taiwan ($14.3 million) and the Philippines ($11.5 million).

Directed by Joss Whedon,The Avengers is far and away 2012s biggest hit on the foreign circuit so far, eclipsing Titanic 3D, which grossed $98.9 million a fortnight ago. Furthermore, it has already out-grossed its Marvel Productions predecessors including 2010s Iron Man 2 (which registered $311.5 million in total overseas gross), 2011s Thor ($268.3 million) and 2008s Iron Man ($266.7 million).

Imax said it grossed $6.1 million from 174 digital only locations overseas, including a $1.1 million opening day Saturday in China.

New to the foreign circuit was Universals The Five Year Engagement, the romantic comedy from Apatow Productions costarring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt. Opening weekend at 285 screens in three markets drew $2.3 million with $2 million of that coming from 235 sites in Australia.

Coming in a distant No. 2 on the weekend was Universals American Pie: Reunion, which is displaying real strength at the foreign box office. The latest sequel in the raunchy comedy franchise drew $34 million from 4,672 screens in 49 territories, pushing its overseas gross total well past the $100-million mark ($117.2 million).

Weekend openings in eight markets included a mighty $10.2 million bow in the U.K. at 485 sites and a $4.9 million debut in France at 476 locations. American Pie: Reunion also took the No. 1 spot despite the presence of The Avengers in Italy ($3.4 million from 291 spots), Spain ($2.9 million at 338 screens) and in Belgium ($1.9 million at just 58 locations).

Universals $209 million special-effects-action title, Battleship, crossed the $200 million overseas gross mark ($200.1 million) after an $11 million weekend at 9,080 situations in 52 territories. It ranked No. 3 on the weekend. Still to come is a May 18 opening in the U.S.and Canada.

Fourth on the weekend was Warner Bros. The Lucky One, a romantic melodrama starring Zac Effron. Weekend at some 2,100 screens in 27 markets generated $5.5 million, lifting the films overseas gross total to $18 million. A No. 3 U.K. debut at 368 screens generated $1.9 million including previews.

Lionsgates The Hunger Games continues to accumulate foreign box office. Weekend take was $4.3 million, elevating the films overseas gross total to $237 million. It finished No. 5 on the weekend.

20th Century Foxs Titanic 3D rerelease has drawn $276.2 million in offshore box office thanks to a $4.2 million weekend at 3,054 venues in 59 territories. China action at 1,100 sites accounted for half the weekend take.

Pathes domestic comedy Le Prenom finished No. 3 in France, bagging $3.4 million on the weekend at 457 situations, lifting its market cume to $11.9 million. Sony Animations Pirates! Band of Misfits raised its overseas cume to $70.4 million after a $2.8 million weekend at 3,900 sites in 51 markets.

Universals family animation title Dr. Suess The Lorax is just $7.6 million shy of the $100-million overseas gross mark after registering $2.7 million of which $1.3 million came from a Korea opening at 249 venues on the weekend at 2,606 situations in 45 territories. 21 Jump Street, Sonys big screen version of the vintage tv series, opened in several Latin American markets, and drew $2.4 million on the weekend at 1,112 screens in 32 markets overall. Cume stands at $45.2 million.

Other international cumes: Medusa Films To Rome With Love, estimated $10 million in Italy only; Foxs The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, $72.4 million (after a $1.3 million weekend at 1,046 screens in 17 territories); Paramounts The Devil Inside, $48.2 million; Lionsgates Cabin in the Woods, $14.4 million; Foxs Chronicle, $60.4 million; Hugo, $78.2 million in Paramount territories only; Pathes Houba! Sur la piste du Marsupilami, $38.4 million in France only; Foxs This Means War, $97.4 million; DreamWorks Animation/Paramounts Puss In Boots, $405.1 million; Warners Wrath of the Titans, $216 million; and Foxs We Bought A Zoo, $38.1 million.
