Like any killer franchise, The Hunger Games has wasted no time in placing.
Across the country Thursday, midnight showings of the much-awaited film were jam-choked with fans of Suzanne Collins' novels desirous to see the movie version starring Jennifer Lawrence as the heroine Katniss Everdeen.
In Hollywood, crowds were quiet but had power in numbers. The ArcLight Theater on Sunset Boulevard showed the movie on 15 of its 16 screens. ticket pre-sales and early seatings for the shows prevented crowds of fans or lines from gathering.
In the futuristic drama, "The Hunger Games," based mostly on Suzanne Collins' best-selling young adult novels, filmmaker Gary Ross offers up an exciting, fast-paced movie while not sacrificing the weightier aspects of the story.
The story revolves round the Hunger Games, an annual event where contestants fight to the death, in the ruins of what was once North America. The capitol of the state of Panem forces every of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and lady, referred to as tributes, to compete in the nationally-televised event.
It’s rare that individuals sacrifice for each other, but Katniss Everdeen adores her very little sister, who she has cared for her since their father died in the coal mines. When her sister is chosen for the games, Katniss volunteers to go in her place.
Her probabilities of survival are slim but she's a fighter who has spent all her life looking to feed her family.
After the grim ceremony to pick out the tributes, Katniss and Peeta, the boy selected from her district, are taken to the capitol to arrange for the blood sport.
Actress Jennifer Lawrence, who portrays Katniss, says the film - just like the Suzanne Collins’ novels that impressed it - taps into the thought of political control through the media.
“We don’t know what’s about to happen in the future," Lawrence says, "but after you consider what’s on reality television and simply how history repeats itself, it’s truly incredibly relevant.”
Whether it’s the political message, the heart-pounding scenes or the romance, the movie has already sold out in a pair of,000 theaters nationwide and many of those lucky enough to get tickets have traveled quite a ways that to catch the premiere. Kristine Adler was one of them.
Her mom described the ordeal involved in getting tickets. “I headed out of Chester [Virginia] at concerning one in the morning and got to the Barnes and Noble [bookstore] slightly bit after three, and waited there until they opened at 9 and was the first one in line and got the tickets for them and that they are terribly excited ever since.”
