Marisa Tomei Joshua Jackson Split - H 2011

TORONTO Looking for local and international box office performers, the Canadian government is backing X-Men screenwriter David Hayters directorial debut Wolves.

Telefilm Canada, the federal governments film financier, invested $1.9 million in the Copperheart Entertainment indie feature about a high school football quarterback from a bloodline of werewolves.

Also getting taxpayer coin from the Canadian Feature Film Fund is the Jake Gyllenhaal-starrer An Enemy from writer-director Denis Villeneuve, which received $3.6 million, and Jeff Renfroes The Colony, which stars Laurence Fishburne and Bill Paxton, and snagged a $2.3 million subsidy.

The digital age and globalization has Telefilm Canada these days encouraging local producers to line up international co-productions, where producers from respective countries share financing and risks on film projects, with foreign, mostly American stars on the marquee.

During its latest funding round, Telefilm Canada also gave $1.6 million to the Tatyana Ali-starrer Home Again, from writer-director Sudz Sutherland, and $1.8 million to the Marisa Tomei and Joshua Jackson-starrer Inescapable, from director Ruba Nadda.
