Box Office Report: 'Rock of Ages', 'That's My Boy' Fall Flat; 'Madagascar 3' Still No. 1

Family pic Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and Ridley Scott's Prometheus are having no trouble staying atop the domestic box office in their second weekend, beating newcomers Rock of Ages and That's My Boy.

The soft performances of Adam Shankman's musical Rock of Ages -- with an all-star cast including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand -- and Adam Sandler's R-rated comedy That's My Boy are major disappointments for their respective studios and stars, and particularly Sandler.

Madagascar 3 earned $10 million on Friday, bringing its eight-day North American cume to roughly $95 million dollars. The animated pic, from DreamWorks Animation and Paramount, is expected to earn $33 million to $36 million for the weekend.

From 20th Century Fox, Prometheus grossed $5.8 million on Friday for a cume of $74.4 million and projected Father's Day weekend take of $20 million to $21 million.

Even though Prometheus fell 72 percent on its second Friday, it still came in ahead of New Line and Warner Bros.' jukebox musical Rock of Ages, which grossed $5.4 million.

Rock of Ages, based on the hit Broadway musical, is now expected to only gross $14 million to $16 million for the weekend if it doesn't get a big bump, well behind the openings of Shankman's musical Hairspray and Universal's Mamma Mia! Both those films opened just north of $25 million.

Rock of Ages earned a so-so B CinemaScore; That's My Boy, a B-.

From Sony -- Sandler's longtime home studio -- That's My Boy grossed $4.6 million on Friday for a projected weekend in the $12 million to $13 million range. That would represent Sandler's lowest opening for a comedy since Spanglish in 2004 ($8.8 million).

That's My Boy, pairing Sandler with Andy Samberg, is the actor's first R-rated comedy since Funny People, which opened to $22.7 million in July 2007.

There's a chance that Universal holdover Snow White and the Huntsman could beat That's My Boy for No. 4.

Snow White grossed $4 million on Friday, with Universal projecting a $13 million weekend.
